Windows 8 lag?
« on: Mar 03, 2013; 11:26 pm »
I have been playing for a while on a laptop with Windows 7.Pretty much your average laptop, nothing too special in terms of performance but lag was seldom in areas other than Cow Room and the such.

Just got a new PC recently, running Windows 8.Same connection, better specs (naturally) and my lag is constant. It even takes the Marketplace 3 seconds or so to open most of the time.Tried WiFi,cable, whatever.Lag's still there, while the laptop runs fine.
Has anyone else experienced this with Windows 8?I was thinking of going back to 7 anyway,as I'm quite disappointed with 8 altogether, just wanted to know if it's the Windows themselves that may be responsible for the horrendous lag.

Not sure if this would be a cause, but do you have Homegroup running in the background? That sometimes causes CPU spikes.

But there could be a number of other things as well.  I personally haven't tested HGL on Windows 8.  I got a new computer myself last week with it pre-installed.  I suppose I should give it a go and see if the latency is bad on my end as well.

Nah nothing running in the background that should hamper HG.I've kept the running/installed programs to a minimum,to keep the disk clean if anything.Even ran a couple scans with Ccleaner to ensure I don't have Pando and the such.

If you happen to test it out I'd really like to hear your impressions.I'd hate to have to go through switching OS because of HG,even if I'm not the least bit impressed with Windows 8 to begin with.

I didn't notice any particular lag on my end, and I was playing via a wireless connection.  But then again, I only played for about 30 minutes.  Long enough to do a run through Blackfriar's and the Exospecter.  I did happen to toy around with the Marketplace and noticed that it opened and closed responsively without any latency.  If I had a higher level character, I would have tested it out in the more crowded areas, but alas, all I have is my level 20 Guardian.

And yes, I am going to have to share your lack of thrill with Windows 8.

Hm,thanks for that test there :)

Not entirely sure if it solved the issue, but I removed a monstrous "antivirus app" (sigh,"app") and it seems to run much smoother. Was a pre-installed trial one anyway so.
I did hear of some connectivity issues with Windows 8 (the 32-bit ones?),so I was kinda skeptical it might be one such unfortunate issue.

Funny you mentioned pre-installed anti-virus programs.  Mine came with a bloated install of Norton (presumably a trial version).  I quickly uninstalled that piece of junk since I'm not a big fan of their memory/CPU hogging shenanigans.  That was prior to testing out Hellgate, so I imagine that may have been why I didn't have any of the problems you were having.

As far as the 32 vs 64 bit versions go... I've heard similar complaints about Win Vista, 7 and 8 32-bit having networking problems with various games.  I am going to guess Hellgate falls into the Win 8 32-bit bracket.  I'm using the 64 bit version, so that may be another reason why I didn't notice any lag.

I have read on other forums like Crysis 3 and all complain about Win 8 causing lag
