Title: HGL Visual design
Post by: SuumCuique on Apr 16, 2010; 08:41 pm
The importance of great visual design is sometimes neglected. What I truly liked about the game was its visual design. It probably goes without saying, that no matter what the game itself offers in playability won't save it if the visual design looks like sh*te.
From what I know, a lot of the design was created by the talented Kemp Remillard. You can see his work on www.kempart.com (http://www.kempart.com).
For those of you that share an interest in art and design, have a look at Massive Black as well (some of it is rather explicit so viewer discretion is advised).
Have a great weekend! Cheers  :D

He was an artist on the original HGL? Are the military vehicles, hunter weapons and hunter armor from his pen?

I think Kemp did the Harp gun concept, Hunter armor and I think 1 of the Comic books cover (not too sure), as well a monster or two...he was basically with initial team along with Andrew Jones (another well known guy).

He also worked on Dragon Age Origins, Infamous and the list goes on. Any recent games in the past 3-4 years which have been released and well known, Kemp worked on them.

So sad, yet so true...

I thought it was Jason Felix who also did the stuff for HG:L, he even has some of the unreleased concept art in his Gallery.  :o

Still its a wonder to see more awesome art. Since I'm probably going Illustration or Graphic Design though... They are a good source of inspiration.  :?

Many people worked on it. The problem with Jason Felix and others like Aleksi Briclot, is that only couple of their works made it in 3D and into the game, so they're less known.

Pity though, because some of the creatures were channeling Doom's  Hell Knights very well.

Well I can confirm that Jason did the Carnagor and the Tormented Souls I think..., Carnagor is in my opinion was one of the nifty designs. A Demon Rhino,Bear,Elephant,Dragon,Lizard... thingy....  8-)

Not too much steampunk, not too much sci-fi, not too much medieval and not too much demon cliche.

Yeah, the Carnagor was really well balanced. Too bad we didn't get the 'Evolution' of the Carnagor, with nifty looking armor and all.

Well the modders have proven it might be sorta possible by giving the Carnagor a Unique Texture much like Tirex did to make his Lava-gor... And I'm starting to feel the same affection I felt when I first saw the Hydralisks from Starcraft, yes... I call those guys cute too...  :?

Be careful googling just 'massive black'. You'll get something unwanted

Anyone have links to Massive Black art galleries?

We can only guess the sites you found while trying to find this...

You could guess, but you'd only be disappointed.
That was the first link I found using Massive Black. Maybe I have safe search on or something; I don't see any option for it though, and I'm not using advanced search.

Some amazing stuff there.

HGL section under Projects

Edit: I also just realized that their logo is a silouette of a rooster. They obviously intended some innuendo there.

Hi AceAngel - I believe Andrew Jones is in the same portfolio as Kemp i.e. Massive Black, is he not?
For those of you who share my interest in art an illustrations, I've found a good compilation of artists within Sci-Fi/fantasy at this site: http://www.sci-fi-o-rama.com (http://www.sci-fi-o-rama.com)
among others are the late Peter Elson one of my favorites. He did a lot of book covers etc. especially during the '70s.
Anyone remember the Terran Trade Authority books? These were a real treasure to a young teenager!

Very nice, Berit. There probably is a great deal out on the web pertaining to HGL; a proverbial treasure trove if you only know where to look. If you know some more, please share!

I picked up a lot from ImagineFX. I would highly recommend their special issue - Sci-Fi Art Essentials. If you are into digital art you'll get the creative masterclass and learn from the assembled professional workshops. In one word - superb!
